T20 Mumbai League: MCA defers Mumbai T20 League due to Covid-19 pandemic | Cricket News

MUMBAI: The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) on Thursday deferred the third edition of the T20 Mumbai League, which was supposed to be held in the first week of June, in view of the pandemic.
“In view of the current Covid-19 pandemic situation in the country and keeping in mind the safety and interests of all the stakeholders involved, the MCA has decided to defer the conduct of the third edition of the T20 Mumbai League till further notice,” stated a release issued by the MCA, which was signed by president Vijay Patil and chairman of the Governing Council for its Mumbai T20 league, Milind Narvekar, who is also the personal assistant of the Maharashtra Chief Minister, Uddhav Thackeray.
“Given the current situation, President Vijay Patil Ji and I, in my capacity as the Chairman, have decided to not conduct the T20 Mumbai League till further notice. This is our way to reduce the load on the machinery and also making sure everyone is safe,” Narvekar tweeted.
“At a tragic time like this, when people are dying due to covid, and even the vaccines are short and almost unavailable, it’s not morally correct for us to hold the league. Hence, I spoke to Patil and we decided to defer the league,” Narvekar told TOI.

“Personally, being the secretary of the Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, it is my moral duty to not hold a league like this at this point in time, when all our energies should be focused on saving as many lives as possible, rather than thinking about profits,” he added.
Just a day earlier, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) interim CEO Hemang Amin had sent an email permitting various state associations to hold their own Twenty20 leagues immediately after the conclusion of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL).
Amin has told the associations that the Board was granting a one-time permission to conduct the tournament by waiving off the 15-day cooling off clause for the state units in view of the pandemic situation.
